It’s done. Biden dropped out of the presidential race. Whether it was his failures on ceasefire, his age, or his weaknesses in the debate, Biden is out. We are living in an unprecedented moment, and what we do in this pivotal juncture will impact generations to come.
Now comes several weeks of uncertainty, challenges, and opportunity ahead of the Democratic National Convention (DNC). Everything won’t go our way. There will likely be different candidates despite Biden’s endorsement of VP Harris, there may be the potential to move progressive issues in the process, but the core situation hasn’t changed – it’s still the people against MAGA, with the same high stakes. Our biggest goal this year is to prevent Trump from taking the presidency, and to keep the House and Senate out of Republican control.
What are the opportunities? The biggest opportunity now is to bring new energy and people into this moment. It’s a time for us to build and get ready to defeat Trump now, regardless of the candidate. The fight will still be in a handful of swing states, where a handful of counties in each state will decide who is the next US President – will it be an authoritarian MAGA candidate or a Democratic candidate that allows us to win more gains in the next 4 years? This is up to us, not any lone candidate. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment, and we need to execute a massive ground game to get out the votes in the battleground states and win.
What are the challenges? The biggest challenge we see is the timeline. From the end of the DNC to election day is 10 weeks, and it’s hard to win any election in 10 weeks. At Seed the Vote we believe that the way we deal with the timeline is by ramping up NOW to prepare for our fight with Trump and MAGA. Other folks will have the role of engaging in a primary or open convention to win a specific candidate and platform. We support that work, but given the timeline we need to work hard now to be ready to do what’s needed in September and October to win big, up and down the ballot.
What do we need to do? Organize our people, and recruit our networks. Raise money so we can send 3000+ volunteers to canvass in swing states (donate now). Free up time to be part of a massive ground game that knocks Trump out (sign up for an info session now). Now is our time to move. Let’s go!!
